Van Lawrence has called Fairbanks home for over 40 years. In 1978, he embarked on his adventure as an ambitious law graduate seeking to establish his own practice in the Last Frontier. Since 1980 Van has owned and successfully operated a solo law practice in Fairbanks specializing in business and real estate matters. He spent his time working as an attorney and raising his daughter, Alicia, who passed away at the age of 21. Van has been an active member of Kiwanis, a community service organization, since 1980. After his daughter's passing, he decided to get more involved in public service. In recent years, he married his longtime friend, Elaine, who is a proud Air Force veteran.

 

In 2012 Van was elected to two terms on the Fairbanks North Star Borough Assembly (2012-2018), serving the last two years as Deputy Presiding Officer. While serving on the Borough Assembly, Van assisting in the revising and passing six annual budgets which reduced property taxes, funded schools, and prioritized road projects. Holding his position in the Assembly, Van has had the opportunity to hear from friends and neighbors about issues of concern within the Borough. From 2019 until March 2022, Van served as a Commissioner on the Alaska Public Offices Commission. In this role, Van heard cases pertaining to elected officials and political candidates who were charged with violating Alaska's campaign finance laws and made advisory opinions regarding campaign finance laws. Van has worked across party lines in both these roles and demonstrated his ability to put needs of our community first.

Education & Public Service

Van Lawrence graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Science of Foreign Service in 1974 and graduated from law school at the College of William & Mary with a Doctorate of Jurisprudence in 1978. During his first three college summers, Lawrence worked for the State Department. During the year between college and law school, Lawrence was employed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as a labor economist.

Community Service

Van has been a member of Kiwanis for over 40 years and is currently serving as the President of the Kiwanis Club of Fairbanks.
